Edit & polish
Use AI editing tools
Request edits in plain language and review suggested clips, opening lines, tracking, and translated copies.
AI tools help prepare options you can review and edit. Availability depends on your workspace’s plan, AI connection, and balance. Check Settings → AI features if a tool is unavailable.
Edit with a prompt
- Select the AI tools tab after Scenes on the left, then use Edit with a prompt.
- Describe a change, such as “Add calm music and lower it while I speak,” “Use fade transitions,” or “Add ‘Try it free’ with a pop animation.”
- Choose Whole video or a specific scene. Select an existing layer when you want to animate it or zoom into its area. Music settings always apply to the whole video.
- Select Suggest changes and review the exact changes listed below the request.
- Select Apply changes, then play the video in the editor. Use Undo to restore the previous edit, or Discard to remove unapplied suggestions.
Your request is kept in this browser tab as you type. You can switch panes without applying it.
Prompt editing can choose built-in music, adjust music volume and speech ducking, set transitions, animate existing visual layers, add text or callouts, and zoom a scene around its current focus or a selected layer. Music loops and fades at both ends automatically. You can continue editing the result with the normal editor controls.
For music, describe a style or instrument, such as “Add solo piano with no drums,” “Add acoustic guitar,” or “Add electronic dance music.” The library includes piano, acoustic, funk, rock and jazz, electronic, orchestral, and ambient tracks. AI selects an existing recording; it cannot compose a new song, guarantee an exact BPM, or change the instruments in a track.
You can also ask to trim a clip to specified source seconds, change a title or still image’s duration, reorder scenes, or remove detected long pauses. Choose Whole video for scene ordering and silence removal. Timing edits require original audio and preserve locked scenes and existing layers. If a trim would cut off a layer, adjust that layer in the editor first.
Custom animation, exact effect timing, locating objects in footage, and generating new media are not supported by Edit with a prompt. Use Generate a scene below to create new footage. Unsupported parts of a request appear in the review. If the video changes while you are reviewing suggestions, request new suggestions before applying.
Generate a scene from a prompt or image
- Open Scenes → Add → Generate with AI, or AI tools → Generate a scene.
- Describe the scene and motion you want. You can also attach a PNG or JPEG reference image up to 10 MB. With an image, leaving the description blank requests subtle motion and a gentle camera move.
- Choose a clip length from 2 to 10 seconds and landscape or portrait format. Review the displayed cost.
- Select Generate preview. Your prompt and reference image are sent to Runway. You can continue editing or return to the project later.
- Play the generated preview. Choose Add as a new scene to append it, or select an existing scene and choose Replace … footage. Accepted clips are also saved in the video’s owner’s media library.
- Use Undo to restore the previous edit, or Discard to remove an unused preview.
Replacement keeps scene timing, narration, and existing layers. The generated clip must cover the scene’s full source duration; trim a longer scene first or add the clip as a new scene. Unlock a locked scene before replacing it. Review captions and framing after replacement.
Scene generation is available on Studio and Studio Connect. Studio uses your prepaid AI balance; Studio Connect bills the Runway key your workspace owner adds in Plans & billing. One generation can run at a time: add or discard the current preview before starting another. Each new generation is charged separately. Discarding a completed preview does not refund its generation cost.
If retrieving a clip is interrupted, Resume status check picks up the same clip without generating or charging for a new one. If Runway finished the clip, its cost remains charged even when retrieving it fails; you can resume or discard that result. If Breezier cannot confirm whether the request was received, the amount for that generation stays on hold, even if you discard it, until the outcome is confirmed. Studio Connect users can check their Runway account before generating again; Studio users can contact support with the Request reference shown. Confirmed generation failures return held prepaid funds.
Create a draft from a recording
- Open New video → Start with a preset, then choose Product demo, Lesson or tutorial, or Social video.
- Select an Original recording up to 30 minutes long, or use Upload or Record to bring one in. Wait for processing to finish.
- Choose your platform, target duration, and brand settings.
- Optionally enter an AI draft brief of at least 10 characters, such as “Show how a new customer creates their first project, then adds a teammate.”
- Select Open in editor. AI prepares a separate video using selected parts of your recording and short labels.
- Play the draft, check scene boundaries and wording, then refine it with prompts or the normal editor controls. Export when ready.
The draft uses your complete transcript and sampled frames, so review any action that happens between samples. If a transcript is too large, you will be asked to use a shorter recording. The original recording stays unchanged. If generation fails, the starting video remains editable and you can retry. Undo restores the scene structure from before AI drafted it.
Find a short clip
- Open a video with an original recording (3 seconds to 30 minutes long) and transcript.
- Select AI tools → Find short clips → Suggest short clips.
- Review the suggestions. Use Play selected clip and Hear surrounding context to check whether each excerpt stands on its own.
- Adjust Start (source seconds) and End (source seconds), or use the trim controls.
- Edit the Title and On-screen hook.
- Select Create this short for the suggestion you want.
You can receive up to three suggestions. A short recording may have only one complete passage worth using. The short is an independent, editable video. Check its opening, ending, captions, and framing before exporting. If the source project changed after the suggestions were created, generate fresh suggestions.
Try alternative opening lines
Expand Opening lines & post text and select Suggest opening lines & post text. Add a script first if the tool asks for one.
Review the Opening line, Call to action, and Post text, then edit them as needed. Create this version makes a version based on your selected suggestion. Confirm that the copy accurately describes the video and does not introduce unsupported claims.
Review subject tracking
Under Subject tracking, choose a video scene and select Suggest subject focus. Inspect the proposed focus samples, then choose Apply and review tracking if you want to try them.
Scrub the scene in Video → Adjust scene framing to check the crop throughout. Pay attention to scene changes and moments when the subject moves. Adjust or reset tracking if it cuts off important content.
Cut to the music
Add a music track first. Expand Cut to the music and select Find music beats. Review the suggested Cut times in seconds: up to 20 cuts, spaced at least 2 seconds apart. Choose a Transition, then select Apply reviewed cuts.
Use Hard cut (keeps beat timing) for exact beat timing; overlapping transitions shorten the video and move later beats. Cuts require original audio with filler and pause removal turned off. If the video changes, find the beats again before applying.
Create a translated copy
Open More actions, choose a language under Translate into (shown when AI is available), and select Create translated copy. Review the new copy’s script, captions, and narration after processing.
Have someone who understands the target language check meaning, names, pronunciation, and text layout. Translation creates another video to review and export; it does not automatically replace a video you already published.
If a tool is disabled
Read the explanation next to the tool. You may need to wait for processing, add a script or transcript, choose a scene with video, or resolve AI availability in Settings.
